Divine Afflatus (a breath of stale air)
Video (2 minutes), 2023
Walking along the street and catching the faint smell of exhaled tobacco smoke has always been an olfactory sensation that we’ve found pleasurable, albeit the inhalation of mainstream smoke emitted from inside another person’s body. This gaseous transfer from one body to another is also more crudely recalled in the old remark about flatus: “You smell that? Well, what’s up your nose has been up their arse!”
The unlikely pairing of smoking and flatulence prompted a moment of ‘inspiration’ in the studio that gave rise to Divine Afflatus (a breath of stale air).
